Sir Francis Owen Garbet Williams CBE (16 April 1942 – 28 November 2021) was a British businessman, racing car driver and founder of the Williams Formula One team. He was the team principal from its foundation in 1977 to 2020. During that period, the team won nine constructors’ championships and seven drivers’ championships.

Death

During the drive to the airport, he lost control of the hired car at the slightest left-hand kink in the road, breaking a low stone wall, causing the vehicle to skid off the highway. The car rolled onto the driver’s side due to an eight-foot (2.4 m) fall between the road and the ground. Williams remained conscious but knew immediately that he could not move and that the fire was suspected to have been caused by a spill of fuel. After being pressed between his seat and thatched roof, he suffered a spinal fracture between the fourth and fifth vertebrae. Windsor, who had only minor injuries, pulled Williams out of the vehicle while waiting for emergency services. Virginia flew with Patrick Head to a French hospital and believed Williams was about to die. She conducted her immediate repatriation to England, where doctors at the Royal London Hospital performed a tracheotomy, which allowed her lungs to drain out of the fluid, almost certainly saving her life. Williams required constant care and physical dependence on others as a result of the accident. 

Virginia wrote an autobiographical book, A Different Kind of Life, published in 1991, in which she described her experiences in the formative years of the Formula One team and her husband’s near-fatal accident. For his part, Williams chose not to read his account during his lifetime, preferring to leave the past in the past.  He was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, and died on 7 March 2013 at the age of 66. 

Williams was hospitalized on 26 November 2021, and died two days later, on the morning of 28 November, at the age of 79.

Cause of death

Before the road accident that changed his life at age 43, Frank Williams typified a breed of fast-living, almost pathologically competitive alpha males who fought battles to dominate the sport at their highest level. After had graduated from the mostly amateur world of British motor racing. ,

When Williams, who died at the age of 79, used all four limbs one evening in the spring of 1986 after a rental car crashed from a circuit in southern France to a nearby airport at a high speed. Lost, his career as the driving force of a championship-winning Formula One team appeared to be coming to an end.

For several days he was on the verge of death. But tetraplegia was to prove no match for the dedicated man’s desire to win, often against the odds. Thirteen years later, seven more Constructors’ World Championships and five more drivers’ titles were added to each pair secured by his team before the accident, he was knighted for his services to motor sport. World title-winning men at the wheel of their cars were Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.

The founder and former head of Williams F1, Sir Frank Williams has died at the age of 79. Williams died on Sunday morning after being hospitalized on Friday due to health complications. Frank Williams, the longest-serving team principal in Formula 1, completed 50 years as an F1 team boss in 2019. The F1 legend left and his family, including daughter Claire, who had run the team since 2013, quit racing this year. The team at investment firm Dorilton Capital.

Williams was a fundamental part of many people’s lives in motorsport. For three-time 500cc world champion Wayne Rainey, Williams was instrumental in helping him rebuild his life after suffering an accident in 1993 that left him paralyzed from the middle of the chest.

Rainey was one of the stars of MotoGP’s 500cc era from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, achieving 24 victories and 65 podiums for Yamaha on the way to three consecutive world titles from 1990 to 1992. Most famously, he enjoyed a fierce rivalry with fellow American Kevin Schwantz during that period.
