Story

While literally growing up at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in suburban Washington, D.C., she took up racket in hand, a 15-acre indoor/outdoor tennis complex, until she found the best of competition.

At the age of 6, he was too young to compete with those opponents.

But he was old enough to learn.

“You might have seen him sitting on the bench, but he was so small that his feet didn’t even touch the ground,” recalled JTCC founder Vesa Ponca, who currently serves as senior director of tennis. “But he used to watch the top players and the coaches they worked with, and was always completely focused. Then he would go to the back wall of the facility and copy everything he saw. A total student of the game.”

The son of immigrants from the African nation of Sierra Leone, Tiafo was a poor kid who fell in love with a rich man’s game. He was the son of a tennis center custodian, wearing a hand-me-down while the kids in his class arrived at the JTCC in a driver-powered Rolls-Royce.

Some of those kids, who looked like a million bucks in their designer gear, teased Tiafo.

“What’s with that Pikachu shirt you wear every day?”

“Your big toe is sticking out the hole in your shoe—you need a new pair!”

“Why are you here wearing khaki shorts while playing tennis?”

Today Tiafoe, 21, just laughs.

He has moved from living in the tennis center’s storage room with his father and twin brother to a luxury apartment with a wonderful view over the Southwest DC waterfront.

He has grown from a kid soaking in tennis knowledge to be the future of American men’s tennis.
