Protestors
A group of Just Stop Oil protesters have been sentenced for taking part in the track invasion at last year’s Formula 1 British Grand Prix.
In February four men and two women were convicted of causing a public nuisance.
During his trial, prosecutors said his actions posed a risk of “serious harm” because some people were sitting at the Silverstone track while F1 cars were racing.
The group were given a mixture of suspended sentences and community orders.
The group claims to have assessed the risks to minimize the possibility of loss.
Sentencing him at Northampton Crown Court, Judge Neil Garnham said he was “kidding himself” into thinking he had the expertise to assess the risk.
He said that the protesters “genuinely and deeply believed that there is a climate emergency”, which was the reason for their protest.
