Formula One (commonly known as Formula 1 or F1) is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Practice today
Follow live updates and video from Friday’s Qatar Grand Prix practice and qualifying, with Max Verstappen on the verge of winning a third consecutive world championship.
Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri, Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson are all acquitted and will face no further investigation for their slow outlaps which were slower than the mandatory lap time of 1:46.0.
Hamilton and Tsunoda both had two lap time violations and the Mercedes driver needed to give more clarification about one of his incidents.
Qatar qualifying
Max Verstappen secured pole position for Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix as the indomitable Dutchman inches closer to his third world title.
Verstappen will be crowned world champion if he finishes at least sixth in Saturday’s 19-lap race at the Lusail International Circuit. And the Red Bull driver began his quest to become just the 11th driver in history to win the title on more than two occasions in typically unique fashion by clocking the fastest time in qualifying.
In terms of championship mathematics, Verstappen’s pole lap for Sunday’s main event will be redundant if he scores three points in Saturday’s sprint – the starting order for which will be determined by the second qualifying session on Saturday afternoon – or Sergio Perez finishes inside. Fails to make top three. The probability of both is high.
As Verstappen moved into top position, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton took second and third on the grid for Mercedes, with Pérez failing to make it out of Q2.

The 17th round of the Formula 1 season will take place in Qatar, with the Lusail International Circuit hosting the event.
Qatar returns to the calendar after making its debut in 2021 before dropping a spot on last year’s schedule.
