In all, there are 23 scheduled races in the 2021 F1 season, with the Portuguese Grand Prix added as one of the last races, which slipped to the docks in the first week of March. Just when we worried that F1 was going to be exclusively a pay-to-watch sport, a relief meant fans could still watch – albeit just the highlights and not live – on Channel 4 in the UK.
Sky still has exclusive rights to show the race live in the UK (as well as Italy and now Germany), meaning the only coverage on free-to-air TV in the UK will be available on Channel 4.
This arrangement runs through 2024 and until the end of the 2022 season, extended highlights of both qualifying and races can be shown on Channel 4 only two and a half hours after the race ends, instead of the three-hour delay in 2019.
That doesn’t mean all broadcasts will be shown anytime soon, and many were disappointed last year that highlights didn’t appear on Channel 4’s streaming service — All4 — until hours after a TV broadcast.
The highlight show lasts 2.5 hours and is allowed to cover 70 percent of the action.
You can certainly watch Channel 4 on your TV, but you can also watch Channel 4 on your phone or tablet (but not live), or using the All4 app in a web browser through Channel 4’s website.
The 2020 British Grand Prix was shown live on Channel 4, and is the same in 2021 and 2022, as part of the current deal.
