Injury update

The San Diego Padres are currently in playoff position, sitting 57–46 in the second NL wild card spot. They have reached this point without one of their two superstar position players. Fernando Tatis Jr. has been out for the entire 2022 season so far as he recovers from a fractured wrist.

The good news is that the Padres may not have to wait long. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Tatis is set to take batting practice on Monday and then, “if everything goes according to plan,” he will begin a minor league rehab assignment this coming weekend.

It may still take some time for Tatis to go into rehab stint before he actually joins the Padres, but any major move is certainly welcome at this point. It was all back on March 16 when he had surgery and, at the time, it was expected that Tatis would be in remission for three months. In the months that followed, it looked like slow progress toward a comeback with a few setbacks.

When will return

The return of San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. is set to be delayed until the 2023 season, six days after he was dropped on a rehab assignment in his next leg to return from a fractured wrist.

Major League Baseball announced Friday that Tatis has received an 80-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy after testing positive for clobetabol.

In a statement released by the MLB Players Association, Tatis noted that he “inadvertently took a drug to treat shingles” that contained a banned substance:

Per Bob Nightingale for USA Today, Tatis will also be ineligible to play for the Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

On July 15, Tatis was cleared to begin taking a swing. More imaging was done on his broken left wrist, and the team and doctors agreed that it was recovering well enough that he could start working on the T. The Padres always said that once Tatis was allowed to start swing, it would be a two-week process to get him in front of live pitching. Tati will go from tee work to light toss practice and finally to batting practice.

The timetable for Tatis can be fast or slow depending on how his wrist is feeling. Assuming things are going well, Tatis could return to the San Diego lineup in early August.
