Fernando Gabriel Tatis Medina Jr. (born January 2, 1999), nicknamed “El Nio” or “Bebo”, is a Dominican professional baseball shortstop and outfielder who plays for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB). What happened to
The Padres have been hot this season, and are right in the thick of things as they race the Los Angeles Dodgers at NL West. Right now, they’re among the top teams in baseball, and they’re doing it without one of their most important players, shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
This is because during the off-season, Tatis fractured his wrist, forcing him to undergo surgery to repair the injury.
Center field
Although he has primarily played shortstop in his professional career, Tatis made seven appearances at center field and 20 at right field last season.
After the season, Tatis told reporters that he had plans to return to shortstop exclusively in 2022 and beyond.
“(AJ Preller) signed a shortstop, and he’s going to be a shortstop,” he said. “That’s the plan so far, and I don’t plan on moving forward from there for very long.”
The 23-year-old has been inconsistent on the field, though, according to FanGraph, having saved a total of minus-nine defensive runs in his three-year career. He was minus-six in the category alone last year.
Kim has 13 defensive runs saved over the past two years as shortstop, including plus-four points this season, per Fangraph.
Tatis is the best hitter and was an MVP candidate in each of the last two years. He finished .282 last season with .364 on-base percentage, 42 home runs and 25 stolen bases. His .975 OPS ranked fourth among the majors.
Kim averages just .223 with four home runs this year with .653 OPS.
The Padres could still fit into the lineup, with Tatis replacing struggling Trent Grisham in center field, adding a big bat to the offense without taking away Kim’s strong defensive ability.
Tatis’ apparent willingness to switch positions could be a significant boost to San Diego’s title hopes.
