News:

Hamilton was partly ahead of Alonso when he turned into the corner to catch the apex, denying Alonso any space and triggering a collision.

While Alonso was able to continue, the rear end of Hamilton’s car was catapulted into the air and the Briton was asked to pull over by his Mercedes team with damage.

Today:

Afterwards Hamilton accepted blame for the incident, explaining that Alonso was in his blind spot.

“It was definitely my fault today,” he said when Motorsport.com quizzed him about the collision.

With George Russell hounding down Sainz in P3, the worry for Ferrari is that they may not even make it on to the podium today. Further back, Vettel sees off Gasly going into turn one for P7. The Frenchman claims his place back seconds later – while Ocon leaves them to it and steams around both cars to leave them eating dust.

A disconsolate Lewis Hamilton, interviewed in the garage, says the incident with Fernando Alonso at the start was his fault – “He was in my blind spot, I didn’t see him, I didn’t give him enough room”.
