Max Verstappen took a crushing pole position with the help of a tow from Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez – to seize the advantage over rival Lewis Hamilton for the title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Dutchman clocked an impressive 1m22.109s on his first run to take the 10th pole position of the season, with Hamilton finishing second at 0.371s and Lando Norris in an astonishing third.

Red Bull sent Pérez out onto the track in the first quarter, ahead of Verstappen, with Mexican rook Verstappen, straight down for a long time before turning out of the way and sacrificing his lap.

Verstappen made the most of the boost to slot in the provisional pole, with Hamilton locking on the hairpin and ending almost half a second adrift.

A furious Toto Wolff urged race director Michael Massi to cancel his controversial call to the closing stages in Abu Dhabi.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix lived up to its billing and more, as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen went on to battle on points in their title decider.

And as the race entered its finale stage, Hamilton was on his way to a record eighth World Championship.

Verstappen had previously stayed under a virtual safety car for a new set of hard tyres, but he was not giving the Dutchman the pace he needed to close the gap in the lead to Hamilton.

However, things changed completely when Williams’ Nicolas Latifi crashed after colliding with Haas’ Mick Schumacher.

The safety car was deployed and Verstappen returned to the pits for a set of soft tyres, a free pit stop under SC conditions.

The issue though was that the laps were coming to an end, and with the lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen it looked like the Briton would be on hold if racing resumed.

It is common for the safety car to drive those lapped cars out of the way when the race conditions return and Massey had ordered that, which meant that Verstappen was just behind Hamilton when the race resumed for one final epic lap. started from

However, among the title rivals only those five lapped cars unlapped themselves, not all.

Mercedes boss Wolff pleaded on the radio: “Michael, that’s not right.”

But to no avail, the race resumed with one lap, Verstappen overtaking and going on to become the 2021 world champion.

A furious and distraught Wolff was back straight on the radio, demanding that Massie reverse his decision, but the race director’s return was fierce.

Toto Wolff: “You need to reinstate the first lap, that’s not right.”

Michael Massey: “Toto, it’s called a motor race. We went to car racing.”
