At the University of Alabama, being a huge, NFL first-round lineman isn’t enough to really stand out. The starting 11s have at least three or four variants every single season, hence why they train on whichever team they play.

Of course, every few years there appears to be a mountain of man who is the clear-cut alpha of the O-line. DJ Fluker, Ryan Kelly and Cam Robinson are just a few of the names that come to mind. Most recently, Jonah Williams and Jedric Wills.

In 2021, it looks like that role will be filled by Evan Neal, the 6-foot-7, 360-pound junior offensive tackle who has started in nearly every game over the past two seasons for the Crimson Tide. As of now, he’s projected to go inside the top 20 in the 2022 NFL Draft, and you’d imagine his stock could only rise, especially when you see he can do things like

NC State’s Ikem Ekwonu may be the best run blocker in this group (he’s definitely the meanest). However, Neil appears to be the top overall prospect in a deep section of offensive tackle.

Neil (6-foot-7,337 pounds) has a lot of power, athleticism, and length, but it’s his technical refinement that really stands on the tape. One look at Neil’s backside blocks and you’ll see a rare level of execution for a 21-year-old lineman. He also comes ready-made as an ace in pass protection.

Carrier pressure rates allowed on third and four-plus on offensive tackle per @PFF:

Bernhard Raimann – 3.3% (150 Snaps)

Evan Neil – 4.3% (212)
Ikem Ekwonu – 4.5% (290)

Tyler Smith – 6.4% (251)
Charles Cross – 6.5% (214)

Trevor Penning – 7.8% (309)

Even for teams with a poor track record in the draft, it’s hard to spoil a top-10 overall pick. However, Neil will be close to a slam-dunk however these things get. It has a strong appeal for a front office desperate to claim victory.
