Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard defeated Indian Karman Kaur Thandi 6-2, 7-6 in the round-of-16 of the WTA Chennai Open 250 at the SDAT Stadium here on Wednesday.

The Indian challenge ended in a singles draw with Karman’s exit. Country number one Ankita Raina had lost to Tatjana Maria in the first round on Tuesday. Bouchard wasn’t bothered for the most part of the first set and looked ready to get away with it before India’s No. 2 could fight back and win two games. Inconsistency as former world No 5 left Karman out of the set 6-2.

After easily reaching a one-set lead, the former Wimbledon runner-up was told to work harder by Karman, which was cheered by the home crowd. 2-2, the 24-year-old Indian won three games in a row and looked ready to push the match into the decider.
