Eric Steven Weddell (born January 4, 1985) is an American former football defender who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons. He played college football in Utah, where he was a unanimous All-American, and was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. During his nine seasons with the Chargers, Weddle received three Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro honors. Weddle spent his next three seasons as a member of the Baltimore Ravens, earning Pro Bowl honors in each and increasing his total selection to six. He retired in 2019 after playing for the Los Angeles Rams, but returned two years later to join their playoff run, which culminated with a win in Super Bowl LVI. After the victory, he retired for the second time.

The safety retired at the end of the 2019 season, but officially came out of retirement on January 12 of this year to help the Los Angeles Rams during the playoffs following injuries in the secondary.

After a two-year absence, Weddle played later this entire season and even debuted in the NFC Championship against the 49ers, where he led the team with a total of nine tackles. As he earned the first Super Bowl title of his career in a 23-20 win over Bengal on Sunday, the 37-year-old was credited with five tackles, a strong note to officially end your career again.

“Yeah, I’m retiring again,” Weddle said after the win via NFL.com. “I’ll go back to my daily life. There’s a lot of bang right now, but hey, it’s worth it. It’s worth the moment.”

Weddle checked out on the sideline after a hit on the Bengals that had been behind Joe Mixon in the early parts of the game and noted to reporters in the postgame that he suffered a torn pectoral in his attempt to win. He said he would have surgery to fix it in the near future, but that doesn’t diminish the championship moment.
