England’s first qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup doubled as the 1950 British Home Championship. The series kicked off for England on 15 October 1949 at Ninian Park, Cardiff, against Wales. Stan Mortensen gave England the lead after twenty two minutes, and just seven minutes later, Jackie Milburn doubled the lead. And the Croatia qualified automatically for the World Cup after topping their qualification group without losing a game, ahead of Sweden, who tied on points and had a better goal difference but who Croatia had defeated twice. Future superstar Luka Modrić made the final World Cup squad in spite of not playing in a single qualification match.

England vs Croatia

Croatia broke English hearts when they denied England a place in the World Cup final in 2018 after beating England 2-1 at the semi-final in Moscow. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who played in that game three years ago, described Euro 2020 as a “massive moment for the country”.

Lineup

The first England line-up of the tournament is: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Mings, Trippier; Rice, Phillips; Sterling, Mount, Foden; Kane. Meanwhile, Croatia start with: Livakovic; Vrsaljko, Caleta-Car, Vida, Gvardiol; Brozovic, Modric, Kovacic; Kramaric, Perisic; Rebic.

2021

England edged to a 1-0 win over Croatia in their Euro 2020 opener on Sunday as Raheem Sterling scored a second-half winner at Wembley.  Raheem Sterling finally found his tournament touch when his goal gave England a deserved 1-0 win over Croatia at Wembley on Sunday as they began a European Championship with a victory for the first time in nine attempts. Sterling, something of a surprise starter after a flat end to the domestic season but a favourite of manager Gareth Southgate, slid home a 57th-minute shot after great work by Kalvin Phillips to end an individual drought that had run through England’s three previous major tournaments.

Goal

The most important goal of the tournament was at the moment when Englandwere at their worst, they manage to take the lead thanks to a Raheem Sterling goal. It’s Kalvin Phillips who makes an excellent run and who plays a perfectly weighted ball for Sterling, before the forward manages to finish past Livakovic- who got a touch, but it wasn’t enough.
