Gareth Southgate has named his 26-man England squad for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The squad was unveiled on Thursday afternoon, before players arriving at the camp on Monday morning following this weekend’s home club fixtures.

Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling, who will join the illustrious list of England players to have featured in three World Cups.

Southgate has selected a group with a mix of youth and experience, with 13 players scheduled for their first World Cup and the other three in their first senior major tournament Conor Gallagher, James Madison and Callum Wilson – although Gallagher has Under-17 World Cup winner’s medal to his name since 2017, when Phil Foden was also named Player of the Tournament.

In the 2018 World Cup, England were the joint second-youngest team when it came to an average age of 26 and the Three Lions named another young group of players with an average age of 26.4.

The Three Lions manager has named three goalkeepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and eight forwards in his group, although it is worth noting that with the flexibility in the team, players in each outfield section are able to play multiple positions.

Well, yes, apparently that’s not really the case. Like national team managers around the world, Southgate has faced many questions about notable omissions as he has a surprise inclusion for Qatar 2022.

Unsurprisingly, England manager James Maddison was overjoyed to deliver the good news on Thursday, naming the Leicester playmaker among his traveling party – “he’s playing as well as any offensive player in this country,” Southgate said – but there were some tough phone calls to be made as well.

Some were enforced due to injury, but Southgate also had to let several players down, with many likely believing he had tried enough to make the final cut.
