Police said King and Wells knew each other and were arguing in front of a house on Sunday afternoon when the two men pulled out guns and opened fire. Birmingham Wales was pronounced dead on the spot, while King later died in hospital.
King, a former varsity track and field standout from Alabama, was a member of the US relay team for the Summer Games in 1984 and 1988, but did not compete, AL.com reported.
King was also the NCAA 100m national champion in 1983 and won a bronze medal in the men’s 100m at the 1983 World Championships, WVTM reported.

King, 62, a sprinter and a U.S. runner-up for the Summer Olympics in 1984 and 1988. Riley was a member of the team, but did not compete.
He ran for Jefferson State Community College and the University of Alabama, where he became the 1983 NCAA national champion in the 100 meters. In the same year, he won a bronze medal in the 100 meters at the first World Championships.
