Fantasy
The Twins acquired Pagan and starting pitcher Chris Paddack from the Padres on Thursday in exchange for reliever Taylor Rogers and outfielder Brent Rucker, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic Report.
With Rogers moving to San Diego, the Twins will have a void when they close on Opening Day, and Pagan could be one of several candidates to save from the Minnesota bullpen. Pagan, who is in control of the club for the next two seasons, is coming down from the 2021 campaign in which he accumulated a 4.83 ERA (5.22 FIP) and scored 16 home runs in 63.1 innings. Keeping the ball in the yard has been a constant issue for Pagan throughout his career, but he has excelled at missing the bat and limiting free passes, as confirmed by 22.3 K-BB% in his lifetime. Even though the Twins are unwilling to use Pagans in the ninth inning because of their sensitivity to the long ball, they should at least play an important role for their new team.
Trade
AJ Preller fitted one last trade ahead of the 2022 campaign, sending pitchers Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday in exchange for reliever Taylor Rogers and reserve outfielder Brent Rucker.
The 26-year-old paddock was a target for the Twins for some time and even tried to trade for him at last summer’s trade deadline. Now, the twins get their wish. Paddack’s place in the rotation seemed to be in the air when the team was traded earlier in the week for Oakland Athletics starter Shawn Manea.
The primary piece the Padres receive in exchange for a paddock is Taylor Rogers, an All-Star in 2021. Rogers, 31, was leading 2-4 last season with an ERA of 3.35. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.
The other player acquired in the trade, Brent Rooker, has 65 career games under his belt and will likely be used as a backup outfielder at San Diego.
