Eliud Kipchoge EGH (born 5 November 1984[2]) is a renowned long-distance runner from Kenya, known for his expertise in the marathon and previously specializing in the 5000-meter distance. Widely considered as the greatest marathon runner of all time, Kipchoge has achieved numerous accolades, including winning the Olympic marathon gold medal in 2016 and 2020, and holding the world record in the marathon with a time of 2:01:09 set at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. He has also recorded four out of the six fastest marathons in history.
What happened to
It was a question that lingered in the minds of running fans everywhere, as Eliud Kipchoge, the double Olympic champion and world record holder, experienced his first defeat in two-and-a-half years. Despite leading for most of the opening half of the race, Kipchoge faded to a 6th-place finish with a time of 2:09:23 at the Boston Marathon.
Kipchoge remained among the leaders until the 18-mile mark, but couldn’t match the surge of Tanzania’s Gabriel Geay during the Newton Hills, ultimately finishing over three minutes behind the winner, Evans Chebet, who completed the race in 2:05:54.
After the race on Monday, Kipchoge did not speak to the media but instead released a statement, saying:
“I live for the moments where I get to challenge the limits. It’s never guaranteed, it’s never easy. Today was a tough day for me. I pushed myself as hard as I could, but sometimes, we must accept that today wasn’t the day to push the barrier to a greater height. I want to congratulate my competitors and thank everyone in Boston and from home for the incredible support I am so humbled to receive. In sports, you win and you lose, and there is always tomorrow to set a new challenge. Excited for what’s ahead.”
Boston marathon 2023
Eliud Kipchoge arrived in Boston with hopes of adding the prestigious marathon to his list of accomplishments, but he finished in sixth place, raising questions about his ability to achieve two unprecedented goals.
On his social media, Kipchoge posted, “I live for the moments where I get to challenge the limits. It’s never guaranteed, it’s never easy. Today was a tough day for me. I pushed myself as hard as I could, but sometimes, we must accept that today wasn’t the day to push the barrier to a greater height.”
During his Boston Marathon debut, Kipchoge was dropped around the 19-mile mark in the middle of the race’s famous hills. He finished 3 minutes and 29 seconds behind Evans Chebet, a fellow Kenyan who clocked 2:05:54 and became the first male runner to repeat as Boston champion since 2008.
According to the Boston Athletic Association, Chebet said, “I did not observe Kipchoge. Eliud was not so much of a threat because the bottom line was that we trained well.”
This marked only Kipchoge’s third defeat in his career of 18 marathons, which spans a decade and includes two world record-breaking runs and two Olympic gold medals.
