The Chicago Bears added some valuable depth to the offensive line with the signing of former Denver Broncos offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson on a one-year contract.
The right tackle spot in Chicago is vacant after Bobby Massey’s release earlier this off-season. The Bears are bringing back Jermaine Effedi, who took over for Messi in the right tackle, but will likely have some competition from Wilkinson in that vacant right tackle position.

Wilkinson signed a one-year deal worth $1.27 million, which includes a guarantee of $987,500 and a signing bonus of $137,500. In 2021, Wilkinson will earn a base salary of $990,000 and a signing bonus of $137,500, while hitting a cap of $987,500.
By comparison, earlier this offseason, Chicago re-signed Ephedi to a $4.25 million one-year deal, which included a $2.25 million guarantee and a $2.25 million signing bonus. Efedi’s cap for the 2021 season is $4.25 million.

Wilkinson signed with the Denver Broncos as a draft free agent on May 11, 2017.[1] He was pardoned by the Broncos on September 2, 2017 and was added to the practice squad the next day. [2][3] He was promoted to the active roster on October 21, 2017. [4]
Wilkinson signed a one-year restricted free agent tender with the Broncos on April 18, 2020. [5] He was placed on the list as active/physically unable to perform at the start of training camp on July 28, 2020. [6] and went back to the active roster six days later. [7] He started the first three games of 2020 with a right tackle before being placed on injured reserve with a fractured shin on 30 September 2020. [8] It was activated on November 21, 2020.

His game on guard has been better than his game in tackles, so the current unrestricted free agent has a better shot at landing on another team as a starting guard than he does as a starting tackle. If he chooses to sign with the Broncos, he will make the most swing tackles if Juan James is brought back for 2021. If James is released, Wilkinson could be brought back to compete with Calvin Anderson for the starting RT spot in 2020. .
Overthecap.com predicts that Wilkinson will receive a five million per year deal for 2021, given his G/T versatility and his ability to play both tackle spots. The NFL lacks capable offensive tackles and some teams may take a chance that Wilkinson could be an upgrade from one of the men who started tackles for them in 2020.
