Dad

Elijah Green, the son of former Steelers tight end Eric Green, was selected by the Washington Nationals for 5th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft. He was a unanimous top-5 prospect in the draft, including a third-place finish in the official MLB.com draft rankings.

A year ago, it was thought that Green could potentially land as the first overall pick. Green played at IMG Academy in Florida. Only 18 years old, he is small, but Green has got his father’s physical size and upside down. Coming in at 6 foot-3, 225 pounds. His father, Eric, stood at 6-foot-5, 280 pounds during his playing career.

That said, green isn’t just a crime. He is rated by MLB Pipeline with a 70 speed, and recorded on IMG for running a 5.99-second laser-time 60-yard-dash. That pace should help him in the field as well, as he projects as a center fielder to the next level despite his big frame.

“He’s powerful,” said assistant director of amateur scouting Mark Baka. “When you look at him up close, you don’t think he can run like he can.  Size, strength, speed – he has a lot to do in this sport.”

Highlights

The Washington Nationals are betting on Elijah Green as their next superstar player after selecting the IMG Academy outfielder with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft.

In a draft class filled with legacy players, including Drew Jones (Andrew Jones’ son), Justin Crawford (Karl Crawford’s son) and Jackson Holiday (Matt Holiday’s son), Greene also comes from a family of athletes. His father, Eric Greene, had a 10-year NFL career as a tight end and made the Pro Bowl twice (1993, 1994).

Elijah has the frame to play football at 6’3″ and 225 pounds, but he’s one of the best athletes in the 2022 MLB Draft class. The 18-year-old has been on the potential radar for years, with his arrival at the 2020 Aria. Coming during code games.
