First organized as the Football League Cup in 1960–61, it is, along with the Premier League and the FA Cup, one of the three top-tier domestic football competitions in England. It ends in February, much earlier than the other two, which end in May. It was introduced by the league as a reaction to the growing popularity of European football, and also to exercise power over the FA. It also took advantage of the roll-out of floodlights, allowing fixtures to be played as midweek evening games. The tournament was rebranded as the EFL Cup from the 2016–17 season, with the Football League being renamed as the English Football League in 2016. [citation needed]

The tournament is played in seven rounds, with the exception of the semi-finals, with full single leg ties. The final is held at Wembley Stadium at a neutral venue and is the only tie in the competition to be played on the weekend (Sunday). The first two rounds are divided into north and south sections, and a system of byes based on league level ensures that higher-ranked teams enter the later rounds, and deferred the entry of teams still involved in Europe. The winners receive the EFL Cup,[1] of which there are three designs, the current one also being original. The winners also qualify for European football.

With tight numbers, what risk is Tuchel willing to take with what’s left of his front line? Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner picked up injuries in their Champions League win over MalmΓΆ, while Christian Pulisic took several setbacks to recover from an ankle injury. This leaves only the quartet of Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech available as natural substitutes for the front three that he wants to use. The first three of them played against Norwich on Saturday and will probably be needed for a trip to Newcastle next week.

Southampton: The Blues are not the only team whose attacking options will be limited at Stamford Bridge. Armando Broza will not be able to pick up where he left off after his outstanding goal against Burnley over the weekend due to the terms of his loan. Moi Elyounoussi will also need a minor operation on his injured arm.

“He will have an operation on Monday,” said Ralph Hasenhuttel. “He needs it [to recover]. He will miss a game at Chelsea, but that’s normal. He needs two or three days of rest before training again.

Arsenal welcomed Leeds United to the Emirates Stadium this Tuesday, with both clubs looking for what would be a surprisingly rare victory in the EFL Cup, given that these two sides have a history of success in the English game. . The Gunners lifted the trophy in 1987 and 1993, and it has been more than 50 years since Leeds defeated the Gunners in the 1968 final at Wembley.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side may feel it is wise to prioritize the Premier League after the worst start to a top-flight season in 40 years, which has left them seven points to their name after nine matches. For Arsenal, the match offers a chance to build on the momentum of Friday’s impressive win over Aston Villa. As such it might prompt Mikel Arteta to name a strong XI for a contest that his side traditionally uses for blood youth. Here’s how you can watch the match and what you need to know:
