The next England team, and the one we would like to see called up, I asked a few people for their opinion. And the first name that came up every time was that of Marcus Smith.

But really this squad is about who head coach Eddie Jones decides to drop and move on, rather than who he actually picks. Because this team will decide how England will play.

In the past Eddie has ignored popular opinion and pundits with his selection, as is his right, and has chosen whomever he wants. Except that with the recent training squad he was not picking old favorites like Billy Vunipola and George Ford and going for guys who were playing well, those who were young. It was a squad, even if only for a three-day camp, full of opportunity.

So with this latest England squad to be announced on Monday, how many old squads will be back and how many new players will join them?

“It is a young but very good, talented team that has got everyone in their place. This is one of the most competitive squads I’ve ever chosen.

“There are many disappointed players who have not been selected but they know what to do and no door is closed for any player.

NBA

The Lakers selected Jones with the 10th overall pick, with Lakers general manager Jerry West stating, “We wanted the best pure athlete available, and Eddie was too good to pass up.” [1] [2]

In his rookie season, Jones averaged 14.0 points per game and 2.05 steals per game, as he played in 64 games, 58 of which he started. He also led the NBA in steals/turnover ratio (1.75), placed fourth on the NBA Rookie of the Year ballot, and was on the 1994–95 NBA All-Rookie First Team. He won the MVP in the 94–95 All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge, posting a game-high 25 points, 6 steals, and 4 rebounds. With his combination of size, athleticism and defense, Jones began to draw favorable comparisons with another former Lakers great, Michael Cooper. (Cooper himself said that seeing Jones on the court was “like looking in a mirror.” The Seattle SuperSonics upset 3–1 in the first round before facing the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs, led by league MVP David Robinson. The smaller Lakers managed to push the Spurs to six games before losing the series, with Jones averaging 8.7 points off the bench in his first playoff run.
