After losing key assistant coaches Matthew Knights, Corey Enright, and Matthew Scarlett this offseason, the Cats have pulled off a major coup by landing one of the most significant players in modern history.
Betts said in a Cats statement, “Geelong is a successful club with a magnificent culture that has always been consistently strong, and I cannot wait to get involved.”
News
Eddie Betts, the legendary small forward, has quickly found a new career in football, landing an assistant coaching position with Geelong.
Betts finished his outstanding career this year with 350 games and 640 goals, becoming only the fourth player in VFL/AFL history to do so, joining fellow champions Matthew Pavlich, Bernie Quinlan, and Kevin Bartlett in the exclusive ‘350-600’ club.
Wife
Anna is the cofounder of Frankly Eco, a natural, plant-based skincare line, and Eddie is the author of Eddie’s Lil’ Homies, a children’s book series that teaches kids about acceptance and equality.
Private life. Betts worked part-time at Assumption College in Kilmore, Victoria, while playing for Carlton. After several years of engagement, Betts married his long-term partner, Anna Scullie, in a surprise ceremony in August 2015. Three sons and twin daughters are among their five children.
Retired
Betts has declared that he will retire after his 350th game, joining Adam Goodes and Shaun Burgoyne as the only Indigenous players to do so.
His retirement comes after yet another exhausting period in which he has once again shown the suffering caused by his long battle against prejudice. Betts added, “Thanks for sticking by me through the highs and lows,” with photos of him playing for Carlton and Adelaide.
Stats
At the end of the 2019 season, he returned to Carlton, where he would finish his career at the end of the 2021 season, having played 350 games and kicking 640 goals.
Betts, a three-time All-Australian, has 638 goals in his career with Carlton and Adelaide, and will become the 19th player in AFL/VFL history to play 350 games. After Adam Goodes and Shaun Burgoyne, he will be the third Indigenous player to attain the milestone.
