Betts was recruited with pick No. 3 in the 2004 Pre-Season Draft by Carlton,[1] where he played for nine years before being signed as a free agency by Adelaide at the conclusion of 2013.

Betts has declared that he will retire after his 350th game, joining Adam Goodes and Shaun Burgoyne as the only Indigenous players to do so.
His retirement comes after yet another exhausting period in which he has once again shown the suffering caused by his long battle against prejudice. Betts added, “Thanks for sticking by me through the highs and lows,” with photos of him playing for Carlton and Adelaide.
