How did die
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the morning NFL star Dwayne Haskins was fatally hit by a dump truck, his wife told a 911 operator that her husband was walking to get gas and was not picking up the phone.
When Calabria Haskins described her concern for her husband and what she knew about his location, the operator reported that there had been an incident on the highway.
“I don’t want you to panic, but I’m going to be honest with you,” the operator said, adding that it could not be immediately confirmed whether he was involved.
Eventually, officials will identify the man killed in the April 9 crash as 24-year-old Dwayne Haskins.
According to an accident report released this week, the Steelers quarterback was driving down the road on Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale, hit by a dump truck in center lane. The driver of another car “avoided a left turn,” but the vehicle’s right tire hit the football player. A witness told investigators that a third vehicle may also have been involved.
Did pass away
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins died Saturday morning after being hit by a dump truck while he was driving on a South Florida highway. Haskins was 24 years old.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lieutenant Indiana Miranda said Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene.
“He was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595,” Miranda said in an emailed statement.
He did not explain why Haskins was on the highway near Fort Lauderdale at the time. The accident caused the highway to remain closed for several hours, and Miranda said it was “an open traffic homicide investigation.”
Haskins was training in South Florida with other Steelers quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.
“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. “Upon arrival in Pittsburgh he quickly became part of our Steelers family and was one of our toughest workers on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but also a tremendous friend to so many. I am really heart broken.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Calabria, and their entire family during this difficult time.”
How was hit
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was drunk when a dump truck hit and killed him on a Florida interstate earlier this year, according to a toxicology report released Monday by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The medical examiner’s office determined that the blood-alcohol concentration at the time of Haskins’ autopsy was at least 0.20%, more than double the legal limit of .08% in Florida.
An accompanying investigation report stated that Haskins went to a club and “drank heavily” the night before his death.
Haskins’ death has been ruled an accident, with the cause of death listed as “multiple blunt force injuries”, according to an autopsy report released on Monday. He was 24 years old.
