Mike Hastings says that one of Dryden McKay’s most admirable qualities is his ability to remain calm when things are going on around him.

Hastings, the ninth-year head coach of the Minnesota State University men’s hockey team, goes back to his memory bank in October of McKay’s freshman season 2018. The Mavericks were playing the second game of a non-conference series in North Dakota and were looking to be the rare team that sweeps the Fighting Hawks into their building.

Downers Grove, Ill. McKay, a senior U.K., was a hobby hat trick finalist last year and a three-time finalist for the Mike Richter Award as the nation’s top goalscorer. McKay (38-4-0) holds the NCAA record for wins in a season, is second in the nation with 1.27 goals-average, third with .934 save percentage and second with 10 shutouts. is in place. He has an NCAA record of 34 career shutouts.

“He’s such a humble young man,” Hastings said. “He does his business and earns the respect of his peers, which in this day and age is something that’s pretty unique. … Points fingers right when he pats him on the back, and He’ll point a thumb [at himself] when things aren’t going well.”

Brink, a junior, leads the country with 57 points and 43 assists. He was named the NCHC Player of the Year and Forward of the Year after leading the Pioneers to the conference title. He was a second-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2019 and helped the United States win a gold medal at the 2019 World Junior Championships.

After a four-game blip in December, Minnesota State turned the calendar to 2019 and there’s no looking back as the Mavericks inch closer to the NCAA Tournament bid.

The return of head coach Mike Hastings sparked the team, which has claimed nine out of 10 games since entering 2019, as it holds an 11-point lead in the WCHA.

Keeping the electric power play and inherent youth aside, the Mavericks are backed by new netminder Dryden McKay. The 21-year-old has started 12 games in a row and continues to solidify himself as one of the best goalscorers in college hockey.

McKay’s development has launched the Mavericks at No. 6 in the country and put to rest the biggest question mark entering the season. In fact, McKay has straightened that question mark into an exclamation point with an impressive campaign.

He has been the undisputed top freshman netminder in the country and is near the top in four notable goalscoring categories. At 16-5-1 overall, McKay has 1.91 goals—compared to average (seventh), a .921 saving percentage (ranked eighth among goalscorers who faced at least 500 shots), a .750. Win percentage (tied for fifth) and three shutouts (tied for eighth).
