Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers drew an interesting comparison Friday when discussing the organization’s efforts to persuade disgruntled All-Star forward Ben Simmons to report to training camp. Simmons has made it clear to the Sixers that he wants to trade, and he doesn’t plan on playing another game for the franchise, but the Sixers are hoping he will eventually change his mind. During an appearance on MSNBC, Rivers briefly entered political waters to provide an update on the situation.

“At times I feel like we’re going through this,” Rivers said. “And at times I feel like I’m talking to people who still believe Trump won the election. So I’m not sure, but I’ll keep trying.”

Just a week after splitting with the Clippers, Doc Rivers was at the Sixers practice facility in Camden, New Jersey, on Monday to be introduced as the team’s new coach.

Four things we learned from his virtual press conference with General Manager Elton Brand:

star power
Rivers believes in Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. He’s confident he can work out all the tricky details about maxing out the Sixers’ two All-Stars once he’s up for the job.

“(Simmons and Embiid) have won 65 percent of the games they have played,” he said. “It obviously works when they play together. If you’ve looked at my teams, I rarely say a man is a 1, a 2 – I don’t get lost in small talk. People kiss Play positions, I don’t miss it. I look at how many points we get as a team. I don’t care how we score. My teams have always been very good in the top five aggressively And we earn points, and we earn points in many different ways.

“We’ve got Ben who scores points, we’ve got Joel, we’ve got Tobias (Harris), we’ve got Shaq (Milton), we’ve got Josh (Richardson). This team is full of talent and we’ve got it right now. Have to figure out how to make it work best. But looking at the statistics, when they both play together they win 65 percent of the games they play. It’s a good thing.”

Championships

Glenn Anton “Doc” Rivers is a name that many basketball fans will be familiar with from his days as a player. He had a respectable but not illustrious career with the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. Having now coached the NBA River, he has established himself as a solid head coach in the league. He has received many awards, but how many NBA championships has he won as a coach? Below I’ll look at his career as a coach that began at the Orlando Magic, through Boston to the Celtics, the Los Angeles Clippers, and now with the promising Philadelphia 76ers.
