Daniil Medvedev made and spoiled history on Sunday, capturing his first major title and preventing Novak Djokovic from completing the Grand Slam with a shocking 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 triumph against the World No. 1 in the US Open final.
The Serbian star was attempting to break a tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the most major wins in history by becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four majors in a single season (20 each). Djokovic defeated Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to move two victories away from being the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four majors in the sports.
Djokovic dropped the first set for the third straight match at Flushing Meadows — and the ninth time in a major in 2021 — but it didn’t matter because he quickly corrected his strokes and defeated No. 6 seed Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in a quarterfinal that started Wednesday night and ended after midnight Thursday.
