Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius was placed on a 10-day injury list with a knee sprain on Saturday. The move was retroactive to May 5. The veteran missed last season with an elbow injury, although he played all 60 matches during the short 2020 campaign. Gregorius dropped .209/.270/.370 with 13 home runs and 54 RBI in 103 games in 2021. At his best, the 32-year-old adds power to a lineup from his middle-field location. He scored 20 or more home runs in three straight seasons as a member of the New York Yankees from 2016 to 2018 and had more than 60 games on pace to do the same in 2020 in his first year with the Phillies.

Trade

Before opening the four-game weekend series with the Washington Nationals, the Phillies announced a series of roster moves.

The most important thing is that shortstop Didi Gregorius has been released by the team. Gene Segura was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and will resume as the starting second baseman, with Bryson Stott’s shortstop likely to return to his natural position. He would have left Gregorius to become a bench player. Without positional flexibility or value as a pinch hitter, the Phillies clearly determined that Yarrow Munoz, Edmondo Sosa and Derrick Hall made more sense to keep as a bench piece than Gregorius.

Even with the release, the Phillies will be on the hook for Gregorius’ remaining $14.5 million salary in 2022. That salary was part of a two-year/$28 million deal that Gregorius signed with the Phillies in February 2021. In two seasons on them, Gregorius dropped .210/.267/.345 with a .613 OPS.
