He played football for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL) from 1965 to 1973. Pro Football Hall of Fame hard-hitting linebacker Dick Butkus, who starred for his hometown Chicago Bears before gaining popularity in television and film acting through his outgoing personality, has died at the age of 80, the team said. Announced on Thursday.
Butkus died peacefully in his sleep overnight at his home in Malibu, California, a statement from his family posted on social media by the Bears said.
“The Butkus family is gathering with Dick’s wife Helen. They appreciate your prayers and support,” the family statement reads.
Chicago Bears president George H. McCaskey said Butkus was “the ultimate Bear and one of the greatest players in NFL history.”
“He was a son of Chicago,” McCaskey said. “His contributions to the game he loved will live on forever and we are grateful he was able to celebrate with many of his fans one last time at our home opener this year.”

He was named head coach of the XFL’s Chicago Enforcers franchise, but was replaced by coach Ron Meyer for the league’s only season in 2001.

He played nine years as a middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears with only one goal in mind – to be the best, and from the beginning, he was just that.
