Contract
A source told MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson that the Blue Jays are expected to sign veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler to a minor-league contract with an invitation to MLB Spring Training Camp.
Fowler, 36, has dropped .238/.340/.400 (97 ops) in 188 games since the start of the 2019 season. The switch-hitter is coming out of a torn ACL in 2021, which he suffered while slipping into second base in a game against Toronto on April 9, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.
Fowler – whose lone All-Star season came in 2016 with the Cubs – figures to start the season at Triple A Buffalo, where he will form an outfield with Josh Palacios and Malex Smith.
A 14-year MLB veteran, Fowler was primarily a center fielder early in his career, but has since transitioned into right field. While Fowler doesn’t bring much defensively for the Blue Jays (-22 OoA from 2016), his switch-hitting ability will be a valuable asset in the largely right-handed major-league lineup, should he call The Show.
Fangraphs
Fowler (knee) agreed to a minor league contract with the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The contract includes an invitation to big-league Spring Training, where Fowler will look to impress during the remainder of camp to earn a spot on the Blue Jays’ opening day roster as a reserve outfielder. Fowler was limited to just seven games with the Angels in 2021 after his season ended in April when he suffered an ACL tear. The 36-year-old may not be fully recovered yet, so Fowler may stay behind to continue his rehab program at the Blue Jays’ spring training facility in Florida, when the team heads north for the start of the regular season. . In his last relatively full season in 2019, the 36-year-old produced a career-high 19 long balls and 67 RBI, reducing .238/.346/.409 in 150 games with the Cardinals.
Blue jays
Signing gives Fowler a few opportunities, one that he can start the season at Triple-A Buffalo and prove that his skill level is still MLB worthy. Another option is that he is not only showing himself to the Blue Jays, but an audition for the rest of baseball to see if they can use him. I guess they won’t allow him to move to another outfit until he blows up the Blue Jays camp and forces them to move him north of the border to start the season Big companies to be given one last chance.
Fowler has long been rumored to be of interest to the Blue Jays since 2014. John Morosi reported a trade prospect seven years earlier in which the Blue Jays sent Dalton Pompey to the Houston Astros for Fowler.
In 2016, Jon Heyman reported that Toronto had offered Fowler a four-year deal worth $60 million ($15 million annually), but Fowler’s camp was asking for $18 million per year. Fowler was about to sign an $82.5 million five-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals and our very own Chris Henderson wrote a piece in 2018 about how it was a deal, thank you, to the Blue Jays.
Age
