Devin Williams: Hand| Brewers| Injury| Playoffs| Fractures
Hand:
In a devastating blow for a team with World Series hopes predicated on pitching, the Brewers placed Devin Williams on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a fractured right hand, which the ace setup man suffered from punching a wall in the hours following Sunday’s National League Central-clinching win over the Mets.
Williams will begin the postseason on the IL for the second straight year and while there is “an outside chance,” president of baseball operations David Stearns said, that Williams could pitch by the World Series, he first needs surgery to install a plate in his hand to help heal the fracture.
Brewers:
President of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters Williams will undergo surgery to put a plate in his hand to repair the fracture and that the injury will likely “keep him out for the remainder of the season.”
Williams told local reporters that after the team celebration, “I went out to have a few drinks and [at] my home I was a little frustrated, upset, and I punched a wall. That’s how it happened.”
Injury:
President of baseball operations David Stearns said Williams likely will require surgery to place a plate in his hand to help repair the fracture, and that the injury “is likely to keep him out for the remainder of the season.”
Williams told reporters before Wednesday’s game that the injury was self-inflicted – he punched a wall out of anger after having “a few drinks” following Sunday’s celebration of the team clinching the National League Central.
Playoffs:
Williams, a 27-year-old right-hander, has an 8-2 record with a 2.50 ERA in 58 games this season. He has struck out 87 batters in 54 innings. Opponents are batting .186 against him.
Last year as a rookie, Williams went 4-1 with an 0.33 ERA in 22 appearances while striking out 53 batters in 27 innings, and opponents batted .090 against him.
