The Australian government granted Haney’s father, Bill, a temporary visa, allowing him to work in his son’s corner for Sunday’s fight in Melbourne, Australia.

The elder Haney was initially denied a travel visa because of a conviction and 30 years earlier had to serve 40 months in US prison. Bill was convicted three decades ago of his involvement in a cocaine conspiracy case. Over the past two months, he and the promoters of the fight worked vigorously to remove the visa denial.

A Lightweight Unification Fight will take place inside Marvel Stadium in Australia on June 4. George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney will compete for the WBA, IBF, WBO, WBC and The Ring Lightweight titles.

Combosos made its debut in 2013 at the age of 19. An Australian, WBA-PABA and WBA Oceania Lightweight Champion, the Kambosos defeated Mickey Bay and Lee Selby in ’19 and ’20. After being postponed several times due to COVID-19 and contract disputes, Cambosos faced off against Teofimo López in November ’21 for the WBA, IBF, WBO and The Ring Lightweight titles. Kambosos dominated against the youth champion, defeating him via split decision.

Fighting primarily out of Mexico to begin his career, Haney won the WBC Youth Lightweight title in 2017. He then won the interim WBC lightweight title in ’19 against Antonio Moran. Promoted to champion, Haney has defended the belt four times. His last fight was a unanimous decision victory over Joseph Diaz in December.
