At the age of 13, Bane learned that his father, Etieno Akiko, lived in Nigeria. Growing up, he found more success in baseball than basketball, but preferred the latter sport. Bain focused on baseball until the eighth grade, with his great-grandfather coaching at the youth level, and also played football and soccer.
