Monday’s news of a six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has triggered, predictably, an intense backlash. This is fair and understandable, as the sexual misconduct allegations against Watson are disturbing and tackle the issue of how NFL players play out when it comes to behavior toward women. The history of the league has included enough misogyny to justify cynicism, and a lot of the backlash on Monday was rooted in that cynicism. Many expected to be disappointed with the result, and to a large extent, they were.

Amid the 24th active civil lawsuit filed against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, a new report from The New York Times’ Jenny Verantes found that the 26-year-old took massage therapy sessions with at least 66 different women over a period of 17 months. Booked a session with ,
The report contradicts previous claims made by Watson that she had booked appointments with 40 different massage therapists during her five sessions with Houston. Vrentas found that 66 women were booked between 2019 and spring 2021. Some of the 66 women reported similar troubling behavior from the former Texans quarterback.
Accusation
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshan Watson is set to speak with NFL independent arbitrator Sue Robinson this week at a disciplinary hearing as the NFL investigates whether Watson violated the league’s personal conduct policy.
Robinson is a former federal district judge who was selected jointly by the NFL and the NFL Players Association to present a verdict stemming from the NFL’s 16-month investigation into Watson and the allegations against him, which resulted in 24 sexual lawsuits. Misconduct was alleged (20 of which were settled last week). Once Robinson has made his decision, any appeals from Watson or the players union will either go to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell or someone Goodell will appoint to hear the appeal.
What did do Wrong
Houston Attorney Tony Buzby filed the first three lawsuits in March 2021 related to separate incidents involving allegations from multiple massage therapists. Buzby wrote in a lawsuit that Watson’s behavior is part of a “disturbing pattern of preying on vulnerable women,” according to ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.
All lawsuits have been filed by women who accuse Watson of sexual misconduct ranging from inappropriate touching to forced oral sex.
In March 2022, a Harris County (Texas) grand jury declined to indict Watson on criminal charges related to the charges, opening the door for Texas to trade Watson with Brown. Fox 8 Cleveland reported that a grand jury was convened in a different Texas county to consider charges based on a complaint filed by one of the women involved in the civil cases, but it also refused to indict Watson.
