Sexual misconduct
Watson has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than two dozen massage therapists she hired between the fall of 2019 and March 2021, including exposing herself and forcing them to touch her sexually . Two women say that he pressured them to have oral sex during the session. Watson has repeatedly denied the claims against him, most recently saying, “I just want to clear my name.” He has settled 23 of the 24 civil lawsuits brought against him, and two Texas grand juries have declined to criminally charge him.
The preliminary decision came on August 1 from former federal judge Sue L. Robinson, who oversees player discipline, and wrote that she found that the NFL “has carried its burden to prove, by a preponderance of evidence, that M. Watson sexually engages in assault (as defined by the NFL).” Robinson ruled that Watson could only work with a team-approved massage therapist during team-directed sessions for the duration of his NFL career. Now, in addition to his 11-game suspension, Watson will receive a $5 million fine (the highest in NFL history) and will have to undergo counseling. Organizations working to prevent sexual harassment will be fined.
