Preseason
With uncertainty looming over him, Deshan Watson took his first live snap as a member of the Cleveland Browns during Friday night’s preseason game in Jacksonville.
Watson is still awaiting a decision from NFL designer Peter C. Harvey on whether to extend the six-game suspension of disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. For the first time, Watson publicly expressed regret for his actions, which led to 24 civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual misconduct during a massage session with a Houston Texan.
As expected, Watson looked like someone playing his first game in 568 days. He overhauled an open Anthony Schwartz on a play-action rollout on the first play of the game. Watson’s second pass (in the very next game) was better but Schwartz dropped, setting third and -10. Big off the drop, Brown hurts starting center Nick Harris.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshan Watson was suspended after being accused of sexual misconduct by more than two dozen women.
Quarterback Deshan Watson was suspended for six games Monday for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy and closing the league’s 15-month investigation into sexual misconduct claims made against him by more than two dozen women. However, the fine was not imposed.
Watson denied those claims and settled 23 of 24 civil lawsuits accusing her of coercive and lewd sexual behavior during massage appointments, two of which alleged sexual assault. Grand juries in two Texas counties refused to criminally charge him.
The decision was issued by Sue L. Robinson, a retired federal judge jointly appointed by the N.F.L. and player associations to oversee the discipline of an NFL player. The league and the players’ union have three business days to submit a written appeal, which will be handled by Commissioner Roger Goodell or a person of his choice. If an appeal is presented, it is possible that Goodell or his nominee could extend Watson’s suspension.
It was the first player disciplinary decision to be governed by the arbitration process established by the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement and it bridged a wide gap between the penalties imposed by both sides in the case. The NFL recommended that Watson be suspended indefinitely and that he wait at least one full season to apply for reinstatement, while union and Watson representatives argued for a lower penalty. .
On Sunday, ahead of Robinson’s decision, the players’ union issued a statement saying it would not appeal and called on the NFL. also to follow his decision.
