At first glance, it appears that Derek Carr is fitting in well with the Saints and is liking his new home in New Orleans.
Carr signed a four-year deal with the Saints in March after touring with several teams following a tough end to his stint with the Raiders last season. After spending his first nine NFL seasons with the franchise, Carr is taking advantage of his fresh start in New Orleans, especially when it comes to physical stature.
The Saints posted a photo of the four-time Pro Bowler with the ball in his hand and looking to play during the team’s training camp practice. But in the process, it’s hard not to notice the extra muscle on Carr.
It’s worth noting that Carr isn’t the biggest or tallest quarterback in the league, standing 6’3″ and weighing 210 pounds. For comparison, some of the league’s heaviest signal callers include veteran quarterback Joe Flacco (245 weight), Nick Foles (262), Carson Wentz (237), the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott (238) and Bills signal-caller Josh Allen (237).
But when looking at Carr’s current picture, the 32-year-old has definitely grown in a big way ahead of the ’23 season. Carr will look to lead the Saints back to their position of being the NFC South’s marquee team once again, while also hoping to lead the franchise to a post-season appearance.
New Orleans missed the playoffs in each of its last two seasons due to injuries and inconsistent play at quarterback. The Saints will begin preseason action on Sunday against the Chiefs.

The New Orleans Saints signed Derek Carr because they believe he can be the quarterback to lead them to their first NFC South title since 2020. And, as long as their ambitions don’t escalate, they’re probably right.
Carr can definitely win the fourth best division in the NFC. At least, this veteran player definitely has the required physique for it. One could even say that he is working on his… curl routes.
On Wednesday night, the Saints shared a photo of Carr running with the ball in his hands. Normally, holding down the quarterback trying to make a play would be nothing to write home about. Except, here, Carr had his sleeves rolled up, and his arms definitely looked jacked.
