The term “modern day defenseman” is very much in vogue these days. When people mention that word, they usually have in mind players who are cut from the same cloth as Denton Matechuk. While he doesn’t have big time size, he compensates for it by big time prowess, and he has all the qualities of the next great “modern day savior”.
He had 64 points from 65 matches with the Moose Jaw Warriors this season. Matechuk followed him to 10 points in 10 playoff games, further cementing the fact that he could be a steady source of production from the Blue Line. Scouting report
Thirty-one games into his season, Denton Matechuk currently leads all draft qualified defensemen in the WHL in points and points per game. He is currently second in the league in terms of defenseman points.
He blows you away while digging even more into his production. Mateychuk makes a staggering 71.4% of its total output at primary points. As if that isn’t impressive already: 16 of his 19 strength points are also primary points. Moose Jaw’s 31 games were played: Mateychuk’s overall participation percentage is south of 29%, which is broken down as an equal-power participation percentage of 27.9%, 30.8% on PP, and 33.3% on shorthand. In layman’s terms: Most defense personnel have a substantial portion of their points on the power play and are usually of the secondary assist type.
In a draft that appears to be filled with offensive-leaning defensemen: Matechuk deserves to be in the talks as one of the best offensive generators to come from the backend in 2022 given his output and being one of the young defenders in the draft.
