Ian Rapoport or Adam Schefter, don’t fret — it doesn’t look like Odell Beckham Jr. will be taking over your job anytime soon. Beckham, who remains unsigned after winning the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams, falsely reported on Twitter that Deebo Samuel was being traded to the New England Patriots.
Soon after Beckham’s tweet, NFL Network’s Tom Pelicero wasted no time telling the public that Beckham’s tweet was far from the truth.
Draft
In other words…not exactly what the 49ers probably should have filled. But there may be a way to this apparent madness, especially when you consider the last domino that didn’t fall: Deebo Samuel.
Deebo’s contract dispute is well covered, and perhaps the biggest drama of the draft for the 49ers was that he never found a business partner to land the talented “wide back”. Given that general manager John Lynch said before the draft, “I can’t imagine ever moving on from Deebo,” this should be considered a victory for the front office. But the difficult part is yet to come, as a potential holdout from Samuel’s side looms. With Samuel’s presence not guaranteed, the 49ers would have to draft a replacement for Samuel, right? Ideally, someone who can match their physicality and reception skills after yards?
No. In the second round, he selected EDGE rusher Drake Jackson, continuing his trend of selecting defensive linemen with his top pick.
Is staying with the 49ers
Thursday night was a significant milestone in the timeline of the Deebo Samuel saga. If the San Francisco 49ers were going to trade their dynamic wide receiver, it probably would have happened during or before the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. This was the time when the Niners could find the most value for Samuel, who had recently requested a trade.
The preferred bet to get Samuel from 49th was the New York Jets, who reportedly offered the number 10 overall pick for the receiver and a subsequent “pick swap”, according to Ian Rapoport. The deal didn’t work out, and Samuel’s chances of leverage took a hit.
Two other draft-day wide receiver trades went down. The Baltimore Ravens sent the Marquis Brown to the Arizona Cardinals, and the Tennessee Titans sent A.J. Brown for the Philadelphia Eagles. Rapoport immediately reported that the Eagles had agreed to a contract extension for the Browns. It’s definitely relevant to the 49ers and Samuel. Brown was part of Samuel’s draft class, and both receivers share the same agent.
