Yesterday we discussed Cam Radish and his future with the Hawks. Today we are looking at his classmate from the 2019 NBA Draft – the fourth overall pick, D’Andre Hunter. Although Radish still has a lot to offer, Hunter is the better player at this point in his career.

Like Radish, Hunter had a short 2019-2020 season, and injuries devastated his 2020-2021 campaign. Hunter debuted in the starting lineup last season and also hangs on 33 points on the Bucks at the end of January. Less than a week later, he injured his knee against the Wizards and was missing from 49 regular season games.

Hunter returned to play against the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs, where he started five games and averaged 10.8 points and 4 rebounds in just 30 minutes per game. But things were still not right in his knee. After missing the start of the 76ers series, the Hawks announced that Hunter was undergoing knee surgery and would miss the rest of the season.

Malcolm Brogdon isn’t the only former UVA basketball star who is getting rich.

D’Andre Hunter, who is entering his third season with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, has received a contract extension worth $65 million. The Hawks exercised the fourth-year contract options of both Hunter and Cam Radish, along with Oneka Okongwu.

Hunter averaged 15 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 29.5 minutes per game during the injured season. He led the Hawks in scoring in four games last season, including 20–29 points six times and 30–39 points once in 23 games (19 starts).

The former Cavaliers were also voted into the 2021 NBA Rising Stars, which recognized 10 leading first- or second-year youth players in the league, selected by the NBA’s assistant coaches.

During the Hawks’ appearance in the first round of last season’s playoffs, Hunter started all five games, posting 10.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 30.4 minutes. Hunter was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft after helping Virginia to the 2019 NCAA National Championship.

Fantasy

D’Andre Hunter (wrist) will undergo surgery to address a tendon injury in Los Angeles on Monday and is expected to miss about eight weeks, ESPN.com reports. Hunter sustained the injury during his defeat to the Warriors last Monday, and since he was able to play in Friday’s game in Denver, an MRI has revealed damage to his shoulder. Assuming an eight-week timetable, Hunter should be expected to miss 25 to 30 games, effectively wiping out about a third of his season. With Hunter, the likes of Kevin Huerter, Cam Radish, Solomon Hill and Danilo Gallinari could see increased roles.

D’Andre Hunter (wrist) is out against the Bucks on Sunday, says Brad Rowland of Peachtreehoops.com. Hunter tried to play through a wrist pain on Friday, but was ruled out of the competition. Solomon Hill started out the last time Hunter sat outside, and the veteran could be in line to do so again on Sunday.
