Deandre Adonil Chidike Ayton (born July 23, 1998) is a Bahamian professional basketball player for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for the Arizona Wildcats in the Pac-12 Conference in the 2017–18 season and was a consensus as well as a McDonald’s All-American in the Class of 2017. Ayton was selected by the Sun as the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2019. In 2021, Ayton helped lead the Phoenix Suns to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1993.

Deandre Ayton entered only 17 minutes, finishing with five points, four rebounds and two assists. Asked about Ayton’s use, head coach Monty Williams called it an “internal” decision.

Paying max money to the center is not a good investment in today’s NBA. While attending the 2021 NBA Finals, Ayton seemed to at least show that he could be a key figure on a championship contender. He averaged 15.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 22 games.
Now, the chances of the 2018 No. 1 overall pick leaving Phoenix have increased. Presumably the front office won’t feel more comfortable about keeping max contracts on the table, and if Sun doesn’t, someone else might.
