Last November, Kyle Larson ended a historically dominant season carrying the checkered flag at Phoenix Raceway to earn the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series championship. Now with a championship to his name, the next frontier for Larsen on his path to greatness is to try to win his first Daytona 500. And he will start lap 1 where he expects to be on lap 200.

In Wednesday’s time trial qualifying, Kyle Larson won his first Daytona 500 pole, leading a Hendricks Motorsports sweep to the front row. Alex Bowman would spin Larson on his outside, giving Bowman a record-tying fifth-straight start in the Great American Race on the front line.

The rest of the starting order was determined through Thursday’s Bluegreen Vacations Duel qualifying race, which were swept away by a new power player at RFK Racing. Brad Keselowski won Duel 1 to earn third starting place, while Chris Bucher would join him in fourth after a dramatic win in Duel 2.

Based on a second-place finish in Duel 2, defending Daytona 500 champion Michael McDowell will be in sixth place as he seeks to become the latest driver to win back-to-back Daytona 500s, and to do so for the first two wins of his cup. The first person to Sterling did so in 1994 and 1995 since Marlin’s career.
