Her parents, Clarence and Estelle Staley, moved from South Carolina to North Philadelphia in the 1950s, when they were still teenagers. He married young and moved into a three-bedroom, single-bath row house in 1967, where he raised five children—three boys, Lawrence, Anthony, Eric, and two girls, Tracy, and their youngest daughter, Don. Staley now heads the Don Staley Foundation, which gives middle-school children a positive impact in their lives by sponsoring an after-school program at the Hank Gathers Recreation Center. The center focuses on academics and athletics and sponsors basketball leagues and other fundraising activities.

Staley has a Havanese dog named Champ, who has his own Twitter account, and visits practices frequently.

The South Carolina women’s basketball team is taking it to the Yukon in the national title game on Sunday evening.

Fans should have seen it coming based on Don Staley’s pregame outfit.

South Carolina’s star head coach wears a jacket worth $4,850 on Sunday night’s national title game.

This is considerable flex by the head coach. Thank goodness for that, the Gamecocks are playing like a national champion tonight.

South Carolina leads 32-21 in the second quarter on Sunday evening.

MINNEAPOLIS — From the first week of this season to the last, there was never a doubt that South Carolina was the best team in the country.

On Sunday night, Gamecock put it in historic fashion.

Led by star forward Aliyah Boston and an electric performance from guard Destiny Henderson, the Gamecocks crushed Connecticut, 64-49, in the national championship game at Target Center before a deafening sell-out crowd of 18,304.

“Our team battled champions all season long,” South Carolina coach Don Staley told thousands of maroon-and-black-clad, rally-towel-waving Gamecock fans during the trophy presentation. “We weren’t being denied – we were going to play every possession as if it was our last. I know our players are very tired, but they were determined to be champions today.”

It’s the second national title for North Philly’s Staley, who ordered from the sidelines in a Louis Vuitton varsity jacket that drew waves on social media. And it was the first time in Yukon’s 12 championship games that the Husky, coached by Geno Auriemma of Norristown, lost one of them.
