His eyesight was strong, his voice calm. Davis Riley met the media on Sunday after a rough day at the Valspar Championships, but from the demeanor of the 25-year-old PGA Tour rookie, it didn’t seem heartbreaking.

Sam Burns broke into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time with his victory at the Valspar Championships on Sunday. Unfortunately, that means Dustin Johnson bumps into that elite company for the first time in a long time.

Burns’ victory with Johnson’s T-39 at Innisbruck dropped the two-time major champion to number 11. And it’s the first time Johnson hasn’t been ranked in the top 10 in seven years.

Davis Riley and Sam Burns are in contention at this weekend’s Valspar Championship – Riley ended Saturday with a 54-hold lead, while Burns, the defending champion, was three shots behind. Even 25-year-olds hold back.

With his second win in as many years at the Valspar Championship, Sam Burns moved from 17th to 10th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Burns’ rise has pushed Dustin Johnson out of the top 10 in the world rankings since he won the pre-WGC-Cadillac Championship in March 2015. That’s right, Johnson, now ranked 11th, spent little. Top 10 for more than seven years in a row.

This continues the trend of young players climbing inside the top 10 of the world rankings on the PGA Tour. In fact, Rory McIlroy is now the oldest player in the top 10 at just 32 years old.
