David Montgomery got off to a great start against the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon. Then he went downstairs with an obvious injury. There was an initial apprehension that it could be a knee problem. Then he ran back to the medical tent and from there went to the locker room. His condition remains uncertain, although recent updates say there are doubts about his return. That in itself is never a good sign.
Hurt
Yes David Montgomery is hurt. Montgomery’s right leg twisted under him when he was blocking a pass play. He went under his own power, and the team said he had an ankle/knee injury. Montgomery covered 122 yards in last weekend’s 27-10 loss at Green Bay.
Backup
Montgomery was replaced by backup Khalil Herbert, who responded with three carries for 30 yards and a touchdown on the same possession.
Montgomery was labeled a suspect by the Bears PR department for coming back.

Status
Former NFL doctor David Chao offered no welcome news. Upon reviewing the video of the injury, he believes Montgomery’s primary problem was an ankle injury. Based on his initial diagnosis, a return to the sport is unlikely. As to the severity, it will not be known until further tests can be done. This is most likely a high ankle sprain. Either way, the Bears’ offense can’t take any damage even after Khaleel Herbert plays well
