WWE referee
Beginning with the company in the 1970s, Hebner is best remembered for his time as a WWE referee. He was most notably involved in the controversial ending of a WWF Main Event match, in which Andre the Giant defeated WWF Champion Hulk Hogan for the title. Dave appeared to make a rapid count, but when a second Hebner appeared, it was revealed that the referee was actually Dave’s twin brother, Earl, which led to Earl’s debut in the then-WWF. Earl Hebner became a successful referee like his brother, working for WWE, TNA and AEW.
Dave Hebner continued to serve as a referee for the company, until a knee replacement forced him to retire from refereeing and begin a career as a road agent. Hebner remained in that capacity until released from his contract in 2005. According to a complaint filed as part of a class-action suit against WWE, Hebner was reportedly battling Parkinson’s disease.
Hebner’s health declined recently, with a tweet from ex-NASCAR driver Hermi Sadler showing Hebner confined to a wheelchair. “The Hebner family is very important to my family,” Sadler asked a family friend for prayers and good cheer.
