Raiders tight end Darren Waller went from being completely good to go on the Friday injury report to suddenly downgraded to questionable on Saturday.  The fact that he had no injury status — which sent a clear message that he’s 100 percent — implied that something happened after practice on Friday, maybe even on Saturday.

Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Waller “strained his inner ankle and heel” during practice on Friday after being tripped by a teammate. As Schefter explains it, “The Raiders considered the injury serious enough to list Waller as questionable for Sunday’s home game.”

Status

The Baltimore Ravens selected Waller in the sixth round with the 204th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. The selection was acquired in a trade in exchange for Rolando McClain. Waller became the 27th wide receiver drafted in 2015. On May 7, 2015, the Baltimore Ravens signed Waller to a four-year, $2.39 million contract that included a signing bonus of $104,732.

Throughout training camp, Waller competed for a roster spot as a backup wide receiver against Marlon Brown, Michael Campanaro, and Kamar Aiken. Head coach John Harbaugh named Waller the sixth wide receiver on the depth chart to begin his rookie season, behind Steve Smith Sr., Kamar Aiken, Michael Campanaro, Marlon Brown, and Breshad Perriman.

Injury

Darren Waller

Waller suffered an injury to his ankle and heel during Friday’s practice, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The injury left him a game-time decision. The Raiders apparently ruled Waller out after evaluating him during pregame warmups. They did not initially specify why he was ruled out.

Waller, a Pro Bowl selection last season, has 33 catches for 378 yards and two touchdowns in six games this season. His absence will leave the Raiders more reliant on backup tight end Foster Moreau.

Will Play

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller, who was added to the injury report Saturday with an ankle issue, will not play in Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Waller strained the inner side of the ankle and heel during practice Friday, when he was tripped by a teammate, according to a source who saw the play. Waller’s absence is a setback to a Raiders offense that rallied around interim head coach Rich Bisaccia during his NFL coaching debut last Sunday in a 34-24 win over the Broncos in Denver.
