Contract
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Denton Heenen on a $1.1 million one-year deal, the team announced Thursday.
Heinen spent the last season playing for the Anaheim Ducks, where he appeared in 43 games, scoring seven times and adding seven assists.
The 26-year-old has played parts of five seasons in the NHL split between the Boston Bruins and Ducks.
A native of Langley, BC, Heenan’s best season came in 2017-18, when he scored a career-high 47 points for the Bruins.
Trade

The Bruins’ head coach reflected on the trade Tuesday, which sent Young to the Anaheim Ducks from Boston. Heinen will play Tuesday at TD Garden in Boston for the first time as a visitor when the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Bruins. His return to Boston prompted Cassidy to look back on Heenan’s February 2020 departure, who in turn netted Nick Ritchie.
“Versatile player, good teammate, coachable player,” Cassidy said in a press conference before the Bruins-Penguins, according to the Boston website. “When it was decided for Richie to flip him, we felt we needed a little more heaviness in our lineup. I don’t think it was anything against Denton’s play. He was a good player for us, his off. Played from the side, could lead with Bergie (Patrice Bergeron) and March (Brad Marquand).
Injury
Heinen (upper body) will decide at game time on Tuesday.
Heenen missed the final two games before the All-Star break due to an upper body injury, but was a full participant in Monday’s practice and will be decided at game time on Tuesday. Henin skated third in Monday’s session with Ivan Rodrigues and Radim Zohorna.
