Despite ousting Novak Djokovic to win the US Open title, Daniil Medvedev believes it will take some time to snatch the world number one.

Djokovic currently leads the ATP rankings with 12,133 points, while Medvedev has 10,780 points.

At first glance, such a gap may seem bridged. However, the way the ranking system works, there is little room left for speed.

“To be honest, I find it almost impossible,” Medvedev said shortly after winning the US Open.

“I have to defend my titles [in Paris] and [ATP final]. [Djokovic] doesn’t have many points to defend, I think.

After winning the Paris Masters and ATP Finals in 2020, Medvedev cannot add any ranking points to his tally in those events.

With the Asian swing of the ATP tour cancelled, world number two could face Djokovic in a handful of ATP 250 or 500 tournaments and Indian Wells, a Masters 1000 event.

“What remains [of the calendar]?” Medvedev added. “Indian Wells, [Paris], Turin (ATP Finals) and Vienna.
