Ashleigh Barty on Saturday became the first Australian woman to win a Grand Slam title in 44 years after beating Danielle Collins 6-3, 7-6 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. World No. 1 Barty entered the record books by winning the contest against Collins 6-3, 7-6 in one hour and 15 minutes. The win gave Barty his third major title and 15th career title after the French Open in 2019 and Wimbledon in 2021. She joins legendary Serena Williams on the elite list of only two active players to have won Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces.

Collins played collegiate tennis at the University of Virginia and won the NCAA singles title twice, in 2014 and 2016, during his sophomore and senior years. She ended her career as the top-ranked collegiate player in Virginia in 2016. After establishing herself on the WTA Tour for the first time when she reached the semi-finals of the 2018 Miami Open as a qualifier, she found success at the 2019 Australian Open, where she defeated world No. 2 Angelique Kerber to reach the semi-finals. Collins was also a quarterfinalist at the 2020 French Open in singles and the 2019 Wimbledon Championships in doubles. She has won one WTA 125 and four ITF singles titles. The pair started working together in 2020, just before the French Open. His first tournament as player-coach was the French Open, in which Collins reached the quarterfinals, but lost to defending Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. On the way to the quarterfinals, he defeated Ons Jabur and former champion Garbine Muguruza. This was Collins’ best result at the French Open, having never advanced past the second round before that season.
