Daniel Theis (born 4 April 1992) is a German professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After seven seasons in the Basketball Bundesliga, where he was a four-time All-Star and three-time champion, Theis signed with the NBA’s Boston Celtics, where he played for four seasons before bringing in a trade to the Chicago Bulls.

Trade
As part of a busy trading deadline for the Boston Celtics, he sent Dennis Schroder, Bruno Fernando and Anse Freedom to the Houston Rockets for Daniel Theis, the team announced Thursday.
Schroder, 28, signed a one-year, $5.9 million deal with Boston last summer in hopes of using it as a springboard to a more lucrative deal when he re-enters free agency this summer. And while Schroeder produced for the Celtics, averaging 14.4 points and 4.2 assists in 29 minutes per game, his name was most widely discussed in the days when Boston seemed to be walking out of the luxury tax.
The Rockets are waiving Freedom, a source told Wojnarowski.
The 29-year-old Theis, who spent the first three-plus seasons of his NBA career with the Celtics before being sent off in a deal under a luxury tax on last year’s trade deadline, has now returned to Boston.
The German big man made a lot for Houston after he signed a four-year, $36 million contract with the Rockets as a free agent this summer as part of a sign-and-trade deal with the Chicago Bulls. Played low, slotting Sangun behind Christian Wood and rookie Alpern.
He will now return with the Celtics and be part of the three-headed monster at the center that he was with Boston during the 2018–19 season alongside Robert Williams III and Al Horford.

Just before the last buzzer of the NBA trade deadline at 3 p.m. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, ET reported Thursday that the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets completed a trade that would send Dennis Schroder, Anse Freedom and Bruno Fernando to Houston and Daniel Theis to Boston.
The Celtics signed Schroder to a one-year deal last season, and it always seemed like a short-term arrangement. When Schroder set out to hit free agency again over the summer, it made sense for the Celtics to trade him now instead of losing anything — especially since they don’t look like contenders in the past.
He did the same by sending him to Houston in exchange for the Thies, who had spent more than three seasons with the Celtics before being traded to the Chicago Bulls on last year’s trade deadline. Thesis will give the Celtics some much-needed frontcourt depth, and is already familiar to most players on the roster, so there will be a little bit of adaptation time.
As for the Rockets, they will almost certainly agree to a buyout with Schroder, clearing the way for him to be a contender before the playoffs. According to Wojnarowski, Freedom, who has played very little this season, was immediately pardoned. This wasn’t a surprise, given that he didn’t mind rebuilding the Rocket team, which already has a stalemate on the frontcourt.

Born in Salzgitter, Theis passed through the Braunschweig youth system. He made his debut in the Basketball Bundesliga, the German top-tier league, during the 2010–11 season. Theis mainly found time playing with the club’s development squad, where he played alongside his older brother, Frank, from 2010 to 2012,[1]. 2011. At Braunschweig, Theis was also a teammate of future NBA player Dennis Schröder.[2]
In the 2013–14 season, together with Ratipharma Ulm, Theis won the BBL Best Young Player award. [3] Following his breakout season with Ulm, Theis signed with fellow German Bundesliga club Bros Bamberg. [4] In the 2014 off-season, he played in the 2014 NBA Summer League for the Washington Wizards’ Summer League team.
